Microneedling treatment is an excellent non-surgical treatment for the improvement of facial skin complexion. Acne scars, enlarged pores, dull complexion, and the fine lines of aging can diminish the softness and vibrancy of facial skin. Microneedling creates micro-punctures to the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin formation. The treatment can reduce acne scarring, decrease pore size, soften creases, and improve complexion to provide a more youthful appearance.
Microneedling can be combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to utilize the growth and healing factors of your platelets to further enhance your results. Your OMSNashville surgeon will draw a small amount of blood from your hand or arm and prepare it for PRP. The incorporation of PRP in the microneedling treatment has been termed “Vampire Facial.” Often times a series of multiple treatments is required for maximal results.
Who is a Candidate for Microneedling?
Microneedling is an effective treatment for patients with mild to moderate acne scarring, deepened pores, fine lines, and poor complexion. It is most effective for patients with lighter skin tones but can still be very effective for patients of darker tones. Patients with active acne breakouts, skin infections or disorders, or immune disorders are not good candidates for microneedling treatments.
What to Expect
Your OMSNashville surgeon, will evaluate your area of concern, review your medical history, and discuss the recommended treatment for your particular areas of concern. During treatment, the skin will be cleaned and a topical anesthetic applied to numb the treatment sites and minimize discomfort. The microneedling will be performed strategically at varying depths and patterns to address your treatment goals.
After Microneedling Treatment
After a microneedling treatment, patients can expect their skin to be red, tight, and possibly itchy; similar to a sunburn. If PRP is utilized, you can expect the appearance of dried serum or blood on the treated area. Patients are instructed to leave the treatment area alone, without touching it, for several hours before washing it off with a mild facial cleanser. You may experience mild bruising and swelling that should subside over the days following treatment. Your surgeon will recommend refraining from exercise or strenuous activity for 24 hours after treatment and direct sun exposure for several weeks.
